Bill Long (1932 - 2010)

-Transplanted in 1994

Born in County Waterford in 1932, Bill Long travelled extensively in Europe, USA And Central America, before settling in Dublin. An acclaimed Radio Documentary maker, winner of a Jacobs Award, he researched, wrote and presented over 50 Radio Documentaries for RTE. He was a regular contributor to Sunday Miscellany, contributing over 280 Talks to that programme. Before his heart transplant, in 1994, he lectured in Homiletics at Maynooth.

He also conducted many Writing for Radio Workshops. He has written four books, all published by New Island Books; Bright Light, White Water (1992)  a history of Irish Lighthouses; A Change of Heart (1996) Diary of a Heart Transplant; Brief Encounters (1999) a memoir of meetings with remarkable people and Voices of Connemara (2002)  a Connemara Journal, with photographs by Raymonde Standun. He also wrote and presented a TV documentary about his heart transplant  A Change of Heart.
